What Data Matrix Code Generator does

Data Matrix Code Generator makes Data Matrix ECC 200 codes for parts, products, documents and labels. Make one code from text, a part number or a URL, or a whole batch from a pasted list, a CSV or an Excel file, with copies and serial number sequences.

A guided GS1 DataMatrix form builds codes from a GTIN, batch or lot, dates and serial numbers, checking check digits and formats and adding FNC1 and separators for you. Every export is decoded again by an independent decoder and must match your data byte for byte before the tool says it decoded successfully.

It runs in your browser with no sign-up. There is also a Data Matrix reader for images and your camera, and a free, keyless HTTP API for one code at a time.

  • Single codes

Text, part numbers, serials or URLs as PNG, SVG or a PDF drawn at true physical size.

  • Bulk from Excel or CSV

Up to 5,000 rows per import, with copies per row and serial sequences, as a ZIP of images with a manifest or a labels PDF.

  • GS1 DataMatrix

A guided form for GTIN, batch, expiry and serial fields. Check digits, dates and formats are validated; FNC1 and separators are added.

  • Rectangular and DMRE

Every standard rectangular ECC 200 size plus the newer DMRE rectangles, clearly labeled because not every scanner reads them.

  • Labels and reader

Lay codes out on label sheets or thermal rolls at true size, and decode a Data Matrix from an image or your camera.

  • Free render API

Get an SVG or PNG for one value from a URL or a JSON request. No key, open CORS, works in an <img> tag.

How it works

Three steps, in your browser. No install and no sign-up to start.

  1. Step 1: Enter your data

Type a value, paste a list, upload a spreadsheet or fill in the GS1 form.

  2. Step 2: Choose size and format

Pick square or rectangular, the module size and the quiet zone, then PNG, SVG or PDF.

  3. Step 3: Download, verified

Each file is decoded again before you get it, so what you print is what you typed.

Who it is for

  • Manufacturers and engineers marking parts and assemblies
  • Pharmacy, medical-device and food teams making GS1 DataMatrix codes
  • Warehouse and inventory teams printing labels from a spreadsheet
  • Developers who need Data Matrix images from a simple HTTP API

A good fit when…

  • Someone needs Data Matrix codes (not QR codes), especially many at once from Excel or CSV.
  • Someone needs a GS1 DataMatrix with GTIN, batch, expiry and serial fields and wants the syntax checked.
  • Someone needs a rectangular Data Matrix to fit a narrow label or part.
  • Someone wants to decode a Data Matrix from a photo without installing an app.

How it compares

General-purpose barcode generators
Most treat Data Matrix as one option among many. This tool covers every ECC 200 size, GS1 syntax checks, batches and a decode-after-export check.
Data Matrix fonts in Excel or Word
A font alone cannot make a Data Matrix; it needs an encoder. Here you upload the spreadsheet, or use the free API with an IMAGE() formula.
Label design software with 2D codes
No install or license, and exports are drawn at exact physical size for any printer.

What it does not do

  • It does not issue GTINs or UDIs and is not affiliated with GS1. Passing its checks means format and check digits are right, not that a number is assigned to you.
  • "Decoded successfully" is a software readback, not an ISO/IEC 15415 print-quality grade.
  • It makes Data Matrix ECC 200 only: no QR codes or linear barcodes, and no GS1 Digital Link in GS1 mode.
  • It never decorates codes (no logos, gradients or rounded modules), so they stay scannable.

Pricing

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark: single codes, batches of up to 5,000 rows, labels, the reader and the API (2,000 new images a day per connection). Pro ($10/month) and higher API limits are planned with a waitlist; they cannot be bought yet.

Privacy

Codes are made in your browser. The data you encode, your spreadsheets and the images you decode are not uploaded. Saved codes stay in your browser on that device.

Data Matrix Code Generator: common questions

Is Data Matrix Code Generator free?
Yes. Single codes, batches of up to 5,000, GS1 codes, labels, the reader and the API are free, with no sign-up and no watermark. A Pro plan is planned for teams and higher volumes.
Can it make GS1 DataMatrix codes?
Yes. A guided form builds GS1 DataMatrix from Application Identifiers such as GTIN (01), expiry (17), batch (10) and serial (21), checking check digits and dates and adding FNC1 and separators. It does not issue GTINs.
Can I make Data Matrix codes from Excel?
Yes. Upload an Excel or CSV file, or paste rows, and download every code as a ZIP of images or a labels PDF. Leading zeros and exact characters are kept.
Does it make QR codes too?
No. It focuses on Data Matrix ECC 200, which is smaller than a QR code for the same data and standard in manufacturing and healthcare.
